Valerie

                           VALERIE

The broken radio mumbled '500 miles away from home'. Standing on a crossroad, Valerie grinned at the irony. Rugged hair with mild shade of grey, life had defined her hair like its own desicions. Between the walks and halts of life, she forgot what it felt to wait. Or maybe she never knew. After all, she never had anybody to wait for, only herself. Maybe the heartache was the signal, the indication that she wanted to wait, only she had no prior experience to decipher that message. The scorching heat wasn't bothering her, the dark cloud on the south corner was least of her worries. She was forged by the fire and rain of heaven. But something was making her uncomfortable. With nobody to share with, Valerie's feelings had become a puff ball of blur. But intuitively, she knew it had to do something with the road.

'Another new road, another start' - the breeze cackled, as it turned chilly. Valerie wasn't sure if she wanted to start again. Maybe her will was fading, maybe she wanted to halt...wait. So she sat, leaning her back to the tree beside the road, and contemplated. As leaves fanned her, she went deep to her own world, recollecting memories of the roads she has passed. And she realised, her journey was never about starts and ends. Come to think of it, there was no start. She has always seen herself travelling. Her journeys have never been about goals. The mountains painting themselves red as sun plays hide and seek with Earth, the trees dancing on the music of Spring, her legs have always hopped on views like this. She never evaluated her travels with the number of roads crossed, the idea seemed illogical to her. The thrill of the journey has never given her any scope to complain. The songs of Nature took away her lethargy, the blanket of Mother Earth became her food and shelter. She has always been alone, but she has never been lonely.

'And yet here I am' - she mocks herself. This was her first moment of weakness, and the idea of quitting, under the garb of comfort, cautiously approached her. Valerie gets up. Her perspective is clearer now. Nobody has ever waited for her, but the road. It has been her only companion. Her journey was her life, and she wasn't ready to give up on it, yet. Between good and bad, right and wrong, she realised that only experience can be the judge, if at all. But above all, she knew that any road she takes, regardless it's varied shade of light and darkness, it will never fail to amuse her. Crests and troughs will be a part of it, but disappointment and regret won't find their fixed spot. She had her rest. She gets up, looks behind at the old road and smiles. Goodbyes and thank yous will ridicule their bond, she felt.

She takes her first step on the road unknown. The radio plays 'You will never walk alone'.
